One thing i found that jiu jitsu does for people better than other martial arts is humility. Practitioners develop a strong self-awareness from constant and unavoidable trial and error. Consistently re-calibrating a healthy self-perception of confidence and humility. Jiu Jitsu Instructors hardly have a high and might attitude. They act more like your friends and open minded to anything a student might teach them.

Other mental benefits of jiu jitsu is investing in focus, patience , attention to detail, and persistence. In fact, all these mental qualities are not only benefits of jiu jitsu but are also requirements to obtaining your black belt. Jiu Jitsu takes a lot of hard work. Belts & Traits Of Jiu Jitsu

If you do decide to join jiu jitsu without the interest of getting your black belt, here are some traits of each other belt you can obtain and accomplish.

Blue Belt – can effectively protect yourself in a self defense situation. Should be able to control and dominate an average person no matter the weight, size, and strength.

Purple belt – A lot of UFC Fighters fall into this category. Jiu jitsu is adequate enough to supplement their kickboxing or wrestling. But not enough to make jiu jitsu a specialization in the UFC.

Brown belt – The minimal requirement to be considered a Jiu Jitsu specialist in MMA. Capable of defeating black black belts more often in sport jiu jitsu.

15 Sparring Tips – Fight Skills Development

Use Your Peripheral

The peripheral is the vision outside of the focus point, mostly from the sides of the eyes. It detects motion much quicker and it improving the response time. Don’t look at the eyes, hands, or even at the target your attacking. Stare through the center (usually the chest) and not at it. This will almost put everything in peripheral.

Slightly Raise Your Eye Brows

Raising your eyebrow helps increase perceptual attention. Increasing your ability to interpret any attacks or opportunities to attack.

First Defense Should Be Moving Your Legs

Using your legs has a higher percentage of successfully defending attacks than blocking or slipping. The goal is to be out of reach.

Hit First, Hit Fast, Hit Last

Action is faster than reaction. look for opportunities to hit first. And be cautious in not getting countered in the process.

Always Stay in Motion, Either Your Legs or Your Body

Constant movement makes you harder to hit. Moving laterally, in and out, and changing levels will not only make you harder to hit but may create opportunities to attack.

Let it Hit By It Self

Avoid mental processing which will delay response time or sabotage the opportunity. Be patient and when the time comes it hit all by itself.

Set Goals

Always set goals in sparring. It can be trying new stuff or improving the old ones. Goals give you motivation, focus, and allows you to measure progress.

80% Go-to & 20% Experiment

When sparring make sure you keep improving your A-game while also experimenting on new ideas or techniques. I recommend keeping it 80/20 to avoid altering the good habits you already built.

Keep it Honest

Don’t matter who you spar, keep it honest. Give nothing and take everything. This will help you prioritize your attention on attacking and the ability to take advantage of every opportunity. But you don’t have to hit hard, just execute at every opportunity. This will also keep a healthy perspective of what works and what needs more work.

Relax the Power, Practice the Technique

A good rule of thumb is to match your partners intensity. Keep it around 70% power. focus on technique, timing, and speed.

Spar with Hammers

This is related to keeping it honest. sparring a few of these will help keep a healthy perspective of what works and what needs more work. Remember, real gold don’t fear the fire. This is an essential part to getting better.

Confidence

No matter who you spar, you got to believe in what you got. Lack of confidence will only degrade your performance. Always respect your failures and seek to improve them but also accept them and move on.

Conserve your Energy

No matter how much stamina you have you don’t have an endless supply. Relax and pace yourself. If you are sparring in fatigue state most of the time, you will develop bad habits.

Don’t Unleash the Hulk

Your training partners are your friends. If you keep hurting them, no one will want to train with you.

Log & Analyze

Log your rounds and also analyze on how you did in sparring everyday. Write down your success and failures. This will help you review and analyze on what works and what needs work.  I usually do this in a digital form and email it to myself.

7 tips to technique mastery - art of fighting

Most people have a false assumption about learning a new technique. Some instructors think that once they share all the details of a new technique, that the fighter should be able to apply it to his game right off the bat. Likewise, some people will watch a video on Youtube and assume they can instantly apply it.

After years of training, teaching martial arts, and research, these are some tips I follow to improve specific techniques.

1. Repetition

“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” Bruce Lee

Either if your learning a new technique or improving a technique, repetition will be your best friend. We must practice what we learn before it can be a habit, while giving our best attention to the details.

2. Repetition in Progressive Stages of Resistance and Isolation

“An Expert is a Man who has made all the Mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field.” – Neil Bohr

Repetition on its own sometimes fall short. This process will help us understand the major details that we might have missed, by slowly increase the difficulty in order to understand the technique a little more. Also known as position sparring or isolation sparring.

3. Sparring

“Experience without theory is blind, but theory without experience is mere intellectual play.” – Immanuel Kant

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do.”
― Bruce Lee

After going through the above step with much success, try applying it in sparring. Sparring is a good time to experiment. Improvement comes from figuring out when it works and when it doesn’t. And to accelerate your training is to have 3 types of sparring partners.

  1. One that is lower than your skill level
  2. One that is equal to your skill level
  3. One that is greater than your skill level

4. Refine & Polish Your Technique

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore is not an act but a habit.” – Aristole

Overtime you will gathering more information on the technique with more insights for improvement. Refine & polish by repeating tips 1-4 while adding the new details and tweaks or eliminate any unnecessary motion that may telegraph the technique. .rinse and repeat.

5. Develop Different Ways to Execute the Technique

“He who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, will be victorious.” – Sun Tzu

Look for different ways to apply the technique.  From different positions, postures, angles, distance, etc. rep them out with tips 1-4.

6. Consider Transitions Before, During, and After the Technique.

“Water’s formation adapts to the ground when flowing. So then an army’s formation adapts to the enemy to achieve victory.” – 6:34 Sonshi

Most techniques has a natural flow into the next technique. The ability to link different techniques before, during, and after will make a big difference towards its mastery. Experiment and develop using tips 1-4.

  • Think defense before, during, and after
  • Think offense before, during, and after

7. Develop a Re-Counter Response to Common Reactions.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles.” – Sun Tzu

Developing a re-counter to common counters / reaction will bring your technique to another level. And having a variety of 2-3 re-counters per reaction will keep your opponent guessing.

Looking Forward

This approach can be applied to striking, defending, submissions, escapes, etc. By the time you invested a good amount on one technique, the surrounding techniques will also improve. Increasing the versatility and leading you to technique mastery.
